How Long Do BIAB Nails Really Last? (And How to Make Them Last Longer)

If you've booked in for BIAB — or you're thinking about it — the first question is almost always the same: how long will they actually last? The short answer is three to four weeks. The longer answer is that with the right care, they can last even longer, and they get stronger over time. Here's everything you need to know, straight from our nail artists at BLOW in Eltham.

First, what is BIAB?

BIAB stands for "Builder in a Bottle" — a strengthening gel that's painted over your natural nail. Unlike acrylics or hard extensions, it works with your own nails, adding a flexible, protective layer that helps them grow longer and stronger without damage. That's why so many of our Eltham clients switch to BIAB and never look back.

So, how long does BIAB last?

On average, a BIAB set lasts 3–4 weeks before you'll want a refill. Many people find their nails last even longer the more often they have BIAB, because their natural nails become healthier and less prone to breakage over time. A few things affect how long yours will last:

  • Your nail growth. Faster-growing nails show regrowth at the base sooner, so you may rebook closer to the 3-week mark.

  • Your lifestyle. Hands in water a lot, cleaning without gloves, or using your nails as tools (we've all done it!) will shorten the life of any gel.

  • Aftercare. A little daily care goes a long way — more on that below.

  • Application. Proper prep and curing make a big difference, which is exactly why a professional set lasts longer than a DIY one.

How to make your BIAB nails last longer

Want to stretch every set as far as it'll go? These small habits make a real difference:

  • Apply cuticle oil daily. Hydrated nails are flexible nails — and flexible nails don't lift or crack. This is the number-one tip our nail artists give.

  • Wear gloves for cleaning and dishes. Hot water and harsh chemicals are the fastest way to loosen gel.

  • Don't use your nails as tools. Opening cans, scratching off labels, peeling stickers — that's what lifts an edge and starts a chip.

  • Never pick or peel. Picking off BIAB takes a layer of your natural nail with it. If a set is lifting, book a soak-off rather than removing it yourself.

  • Book your refill at 3–4 weeks. Topping up on time keeps your nails protected and stops breakage at the regrowth line.

When should you rebook?

As a rule of thumb, book your next BIAB appointment for 3–4 weeks after your last one. If you've got an event coming up, we'd suggest timing your set for a few days before so it's fresh on the day. Not sure? Just ask your nail artist at your appointment and we'll help you find the perfect rhythm.
