BIAB vs Gel vs SNS: Which Nail Service Is Right for You?

BIAB vs Gel vs SNS: Which Nail Service Is Right for You?

Booking your nails and torn between BIAB, gel and SNS? You’re not alone — it’s the question we hear most at BLOW in Eltham. They can look similar in the chair, but they behave very differently on your nails. Here’s a plain-English guide from our nail artists so you can choose with confidence — including why we made the switch to BIAB.

What is BIAB?

BIAB (“Builder in a Bottle”) is a soak-off builder gel brushed over your natural nail from your own bottle. It adds a flexible, protective layer that strengthens your own nails so they can grow underneath — tougher than regular gel polish, but far gentler than acrylic. It’s our most-requested service, and our specialty.

What is gel polish?

Gel polish is colour that’s cured under a lamp for a high-shine, chip-resistant finish. It’s brilliant for a fresh, glossy look, but it’s colour only — it doesn’t add real structural strength, so it suits nails that are already healthy and strong.

What is SNS (dip powder)?

SNS is a brand of dip powder — essentially an acrylic-based coloured powder. Traditionally, the nail is dipped straight into a shared pot of powder, then sealed. It’s hard-wearing, but that shared-pot method raises real hygiene concerns around cross-contamination, and like acrylic it can be harder on your natural nail at removal. That’s exactly why we don’t offer SNS at BLOW — we chose BIAB instead.

BIAB vs Gel vs SNS — the quick comparison

  • Added strength: BIAB ✓ strong & flexible  |  Gel – minimal  |  SNS ✓ hard but rigid
  • Kind to natural nails: BIAB ✓ grows them stronger  |  Gel ✓ gentle but no strength  |  SNS – can be harsher at removal
  • Hygiene: BIAB ✓ brushed on from your own bottle  |  Gel ✓ brushed on  |  SNS – traditionally dipped into a shared pot
  • How long it lasts: BIAB 3–4 weeks (infillable)  |  Gel ~2 weeks  |  SNS 2–3 weeks
  • Best for: BIAB — strength, nail health & longevity  |  Gel — healthy nails wanting colour  |  SNS — a thicker, harder finish

Why we chose BIAB over SNS

We want your natural nails to be healthier when the polish comes off, not weaker — and we want every service to be spotlessly hygienic. BIAB delivers both: it’s brushed on from a bottle (no shared pots), it strengthens your own nail, and it soaks off gently. That’s why you’ll find BIAB — not SNS — on our menu.

Currently getting SNS? Switching is easy

If you’re in SNS or dip powder and want something healthier and more hygienic, BIAB is the natural switch — and plenty of our Eltham clients have made it and never looked back. We’ll gently soak off your existing SNS and apply BIAB in the same appointment, so there’s no awkward grow-out phase.
